Santa Luzia Village
In a setting of light and beauty, Santa Luzia rises before the blue sky and sea. With 430 hectares, this is the smallest parish in the municipality and has 1,455 inhabitants. Located about 2 kilometers from Tavira, this village carries in its essence the customs and knowledge of the people of the sea.

According to records, Santa Luzia was born in 1577, on the initiative of fishermen, when they built a chapel dedicated to a saint of the same name, a Sicilian martyr and protector of those suffering from eye problems. Saint Luzia thus became the patron saint of the parish.

The history of the village has always been linked to the sea. Initially through fishing with hooks and lines and, from 1842 until the mid-20th century, with the emergence of the Barril rig, through tuna fishing. From 1927 onwards, fishermen began to dedicate themselves to fishing for octopus using buckets and pots, which contributed to Santa Luzia still being considered the “octopus capital” today.

Years later, more specifically, on December 29, 1984, this village, previously integrated into the parish of Santiago, was elevated to the parish seat, having become a village in 1999.

Today, still of a fishing nature, this parish also lives off tourism, with accommodation, restaurants and quality beaches. Known as the “octopus capital”, Santa Luzia offers all its visitors true moments of harmony and well-being.

What to visit?

Santa Luzia Parish Church
Dating back to the 16th century, the Church was rebuilt in the 20th century with the help of the population.

Old Tuna Frame
Located on Barril beach, its origins date back to 1842. It is in good condition and the space has been converted into a commercial area with shops, restaurants, cafes, an ice cream parlor and a bar. Near the structure, it is possible to see, along the sand, an “anchor cemetery” that decorates the area.

Ria Formosa Natural Park
The Ria Formosa Natural Park covers an area of approximately 18,400 ha, spread along 60 km of coastline that runs from Ancão to Manta Rota.

It is a wetland of international importance, which is part of the list of Ramsar sites and a special protection zone – “Birds Directive”.

With around two hundred documented species, the Ria Formosa is home to migratory birds from central and northern Europe, as well as being a nesting site for many others.

The Ria Formosa is an area protected by the Natural Park Statute since 1987, and was elected, in 2010, as one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal. It is also considered an ecosystem of great importance, not only at a regional level but also nationally and internationally.

Bimillennial Olive Tree
The imposing two-thousand-year-old olive tree was listed as a public interest site in 1984. This tree has a crown measuring 7.70 meters in height and a diameter of 11.80 meters.
